چکیده

This paper presents a procedure for computing fluid-structure interaction problems when the boundaries of the domain undergo large displacements. The algorithm is based on both mesh motion and mesh adaptation techniques. More specifically, we use a node repositioning algorithm based on an elastic analogy together with a mesh adaptation procedure based on local mesh modifications [1]. This paper also includes a new technique for eliminating sliver tetrahedra. Some computational results are finally presented that include statistics on mesh quality measures.

Dynamic Analysis of Geotechnical Problems by Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian Method

In this paper, an Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method is addressed to solve dynamic problems involving large deformation. This ALE method is based upon the operator split technique in which the material displacements and mesh displacements are uncoupled. Special issues such as time-stepping, mesh refinement, dynamic equilibrium checks and remapping of state variables are briefly explaine...

The Transient Dynamics of a Beam Mounted on Spring Supports and Equipped with the Nonlinear Energy Sink

The transient dynamics of a beam mounted on springer-damper support and equipped with a nonlinear energy sink (NES) is investigated under the effects of shock loads. The equations of motion are derived using the Hamilton’s principle leading to four hybrid ordinary and partial differential equations and descritized using the Galerkin method. An adaptive Newmark method is employed for accurate an...

Ab initio calculations of rigid-body displacements at the S5 „210... tilt grain boundary in TiO2

Through extensive ab initio total energy calculations of the S5 ~210! grain boundary in TiO2 ~rutile!, the remarkably large rigid-body contractions found by high resolution electron microscopy and Z-contrast imaging are explored. Unlike previous calculations, this work emphasizes the importance of the displacements of the two halves of the bicrystal towards one another. Previous experimental wo...

Framework implementation for medical simulation with a posteriori and dynamic mesh adaptivity

In the field of bio-mechanical simulation, the complexity of the 3D models are usually high and require extensive calculations in order to apply the physics over the simulated objects, but also it requires a minimum error in the mesh displacements calculations. This makes the simulation of soft-tissue a delicate process where there is a trade off between speed and precision depending on the des...

A finite element method with mesh adaptivity for computing vortex states in fast-rotating Bose-Einstein condensates

Numerical computations of stationary states of fast-rotating Bose-Einstein condensates require high spatial resolution due to the presence of a large number of quantized vortices. In this paper we propose a low-order finite element method with mesh adaptivity by metric control, as an alternative approach to the commonly used high order (finite difference or spectral) approximation methods. The ...
